OAKLAND — Seven members of a family, including an elderly man rescued by a neighbor, were displaced after a two-alarm fire heavily damaged their Fruitvale district home Monday night, officials said.
No one was injured in the fire, which did at least $200,000 damage to the three-story house in the 2300 block of Fruitvale Avenue, officials said.
The fire started about 6:22 p.m. Monday on the third floor of the home. Battalion Fire Chief James Bowron said Tuesday investigators determined the fire resulted from an overloaded electrical outlet.
Bowron praised the efforts of a long time next-door neighbor, who he said went into the burning house before firefighters arrived on scene and picked up and carried outside the family’s “non-ambulatory” elderly grandfather. Neither one were injured, he said.
Firefighters had the fire under control at 6:45 p.m. and kept it confined to the third floor.
The third floor and roof sustained heavy fire damage and the second floor significant water damage, Bowron said.
The four adults and three children living at the house will not be able to return for some time and were being assisted by the Red Cross, officials said.
FREMONT — Three suspects in a credit union robbery Monday evening were arrested after their getaway vehicle was disabled on Interstate 880, authorities said.
The robbery happened about 5:31 p.m. Monday at the Provident Credit Union in the Fremont Hub shopping center.
Police dispatchers received a 911 call of robbery in progress and officers responded to the area.

The vehicle got onto northbound I-880 and the California Highway Patrol joined the pursuit, police said.
At one point, a CHP vehicle did a “pursuit intervention technique” (PIT) maneuver on the suspects’ vehicle, causing it to turn around and eventually stop near the Whipple Road exit in Hayward, police said.
One of the men tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured. The other two suspects remained in the vehicle and were arrested.
Police said evidence of the robbery was located on the man who tried to run away and other evidence of the robbery was found in the vehicle.
The three suspects were taken to a hospital for a precautionary medical evaluation before being booked at Santa Rita Jail, police said. Their names have not been released. A motorist whose vehicle was struck on the freeway by the suspects’ vehicle complained of pain and was also taken to a hospital for evaluation.

SAN BRUNO — An 18-year-old Oakland man suspected of using a gun to steal a car that was advertised for sale on different internet platforms, has been arrested and charged with three felonies, including carjacking, authorities said Friday.
A female accomplice is still being sought.
Besides the carjacking count, the suspect, Isaiah Ireland Jr., who was arrested Wednesday in Oakland, has also been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and assault with a firearm. He is being held in lieu of $300,000 bail at the San Mateo County Jail.
San Bruno police said the theft of the BMW happened about 6 p.m. Tuesday. A resident was attempting to sell the car online and a man, who turned out to be Ireland, requested to see the vehicle. The victim did not know Ireland before the two met in the 1100 block of Cherry Avenue, police said.
Ireland arrived with a female and after looking at the BMW for a short time, the female distracted the owner as Ireland got into the driver’s seat with the keys, police said. When the owner tried to intervene, police said Ireland pulled a pistol and pointed it at him before he and the female fled in the BMW.
San Bruno police entered information about the BMW into a national database for stolen vehicles. About 6 p.m. Wednesday the car was spotted by an Oakland Housing Authority employee on 65th Avenue in East Oakland who called OHA police, Lt. Ryan Johansen said.
When OHA police responded, Ireland was inside the car with a female passenger. Ireland ran from the vehicle but was quickly arrested and was later identified by the carjacking victim as the suspect, police said. The female who was in the car with Ireland was not the same one involved in the carjacking, police said. The female being sought is described as black, about 5 feet 6 and 130 pounds with short braided hair close to her scalp and tattoos on both arms.
Anyone with information about the carjacking or the female being sought is asked to call San Bruno police at 650-616-7100 or by email at sbpdtipline@sanbruno.ca.gov. Information can be left anonymously.
San Bruno police said they encourage those who buy and sell items over the internet to choose a safe and public place to meet unknown people. There is an “Internet Purchase Exchange Location” directly outside the police department on Huntington Avenue offering 24-hour live video recording for public use.

A shooting Friday morning near the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80, authorities said.
No one was reported injured in the shooting, which was witnessed by a California Highway Patrol officer who was on a vehicle stop in the westbound lanes, authorities said.
The shooting happened about 6:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near where the bridge declines, officials said.
CHP Officer Justin Hagler said a CHP officer was on a car stop in the westbound lanes when the officer heard gunfire and then saw a man shooting from a silver SUV at another vehicle in the eastbound lanes.
Both vehicles kept going and as of late morning, no gunshot victims associated with the vehicle being shot at had showed up at any hospitals, authorities said.
It was later learned that another vehicle in the eastbound lanes was hit by the gunfire but it was apparently not an intended target, CHP Officer Mark Andrews said. No one in that vehicle was injured.
All six eastbound lanes were briefly closed but as of 8:15 a.m. three lanes had been reopened while CHP officers continued to investigate and look for any evidence. All lanes were reopened by 9 a.m. even though there were still long delays.
The shutdown had caused massive backups for the eastbound commute.
