Police said in a release it was the first time since 2015 a rabid bat had been found in the city and to their knowledge there was no contact between the bat found Sunday and another animal or human.

The bat was found at a home in the area of Chaucer Drive and Atteridge Court.

Alameda County Vector Control took possession of the bat and later said it tested positive for the rabies virus.

In the release, police said Vector Control is the primary investigating agency and it had conducted door-to-door notifications in the immediate area where the bat was found.

Police said rabies is a fatal disease caused by a virus that affects the brain and nervous system.  It can be prevented if an exposed person or animal receives a series of rabies vaccine shots as soon as possible after the exposure.

Even though police said they have not found any person or animal that came in contact with this bat, police are urging anyone who may have touched or may have been bitten by the bat to call the Alameda County Public Health Acute Communicable Disease unit at 510-267-3250 and should also see a health care provider.  Anyone whose pet may have touched the bat should call Fremont Animal Services at 510-790-6630 as well as call their veterinarian.

SAN LEANDRO — A 43-year-old man, who apparently deliberately laid down in a roadway Thursday night, died from injuries suffered when he was hit by a vehicle, police said Friday.

He was identified as James Mozon of  San Leandro.

Lt. Ted Henderson said Friday police “do not know whey the pedestrian laid himself down in the roadway prior to this collision and we will not know if alcohol and or drugs were factors until the Alameda County Coroner’s Office has completed their investigation.”

The collision happened about 11:28 p.m. Thursday in the 15300 block of Hesperian Boulevard, where police received numerous reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Mozon was found in the roadway and after initial treatment at the scene, he was taken to Eden Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated the driver of a 2001 Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on Hesperian and suddenly noticed a male lying on the roadway in their northbound lane. The driver attempted to swerve the Toyota around the male but was not successful and ran over him.

The driver, whose name is not being released, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. The driver did not display any signs of intoxication and nothing indicated that it was an intentional act by the driver, police said.

The death remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed what happened is being asked to contact the police traffic division at 510-577-3208.

Convicted bank robber charged in San Leandro bank heists

SAN LEANDRO — A Stockton man released from prison in June after serving a prison term for robbing six banks in the East Bay and his hometown in 2012, has been charged with robbing two San Leandro banks last month, authorities said.

Jeremy Morton, 30, who was arrested Oct. 3, is charged with robbing the Bank of the West, on Washington Avenue on Sept. 26 of approximately $1,500 and the Fremont Bank on East 14th Street of approximately $1,800 on Sept. 30, police said in a release Friday.

Jeremy Morton was arrested by San Leandro police on suspicion of bank robbery. (San Leandro PD)

In each robbery, he is accused of giving a teller a note demanding money and was able to elude police.

Police were able to identify Morton as the suspect based on video footage and other evidence obtained from both banks. They were able to trace him to a relative’s home in the 8100 block of Palisades Street in Stockton where he was arrested Oct. 3.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held in lieu of $1.45 million bail at Santa Rita Jail pending a pre-trial hearing Oct. 23.

According to authorities and court records, Morton pleaded guilty in federal court in November 2012 to committing six bank robberies in February and March of that year.

One was a Citibank in San Leandro on March 24, 2012, four were Bank of the West branches in Concord, Oakland and Stockton, and the other was a Chase Bank in Livermore.

His total take in the six robberies was almost $26,000, authorities said.

He was sentenced to 92 months in prison, and three years of supervised released.

In a sentencing memo written by his federal defense attorney, he agreed to the 92-month term as part of a negotiated plea deal. The attorney wrote that his client had no formal education beyond the ninth grade, and at age 23 he could read just above a fifth-grade reading level, according to court documents.

He said his lack of guidance as a young man is an “inextricable component” of the behavior that underlies his offenses of bank robbery.

“Yet if he maintains his desire to educate himself and learn employment skills while in federal prison, it augurs well for his future and reduces chances that he will re-offend,” wrote his attorney, Steven Kalar.

OAKLAND — Murder and other charges were filed Thursday against a four-time felon in the Sept. 29 fatal shooting of a man in West Oakland, according to authorities and court documents.

Laron L. Halcrombe, 25, of Vallejo, is charged in the killing of Raymond Coopwood Jr., 25, of Oakland, who died from multiple gunshot wounds Sept. 29 in the 800 block of Mead Avenue, a primarily residential street.

In addition to the murder count, Halcrombe is also charged with four counts of shooting at an unoccupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police have not released any motive for the killing, but have said the two men were acquainted with each other. At least four parked vehicles were hit by errant bullets.

Halcrombe fled in a vehicle after the shooting and police linked him to the car through video surveillance, homicide investigator Officer Mike Jaeger said in court documents. Multiple witnesses later identified him as the suspected gunman, Jaeger said.

According to court documents, Halcrombe was on probation for an October 2016 burglary conviction at the time of the shooting, and had previously served time for second degree robbery conviction in April 2013. Other prior convictions include evading an officer, in January 2014, and possession for sale of cocaine in July 2015, for which he also received probation.

OAKLAND — A man suspected of using a box cutter to slash a woman passenger on board a BART train bound for Oakland was arrested at the West Oakland station after police had to use tasers and a restrictive fabric wrap to subdue him, officials said.

The injury to the woman’s left hand was not considered life threatening and she was being treated at the station.

Authorities did not release the suspect’s name because he had not been formally booked, but said he was a 32-year-old transient.

BART officials said police were alerted about 9:45 a.m. of a disruptive man on a train at the Montgomery Street Station in San Francisco who was making threats and carrying a weapon.

The train was stopped at the West Oakland Station about 9:53 a.m. where police found the injured woman and the suspect. Initial reports were that the woman was attacked as the train approached the station.

Police said there was no indication the suspect knew the woman before the attack and the motive is under investigation.

BART spokesman Chris Filippi said in a release that the man was uncooperative with officers and refused their orders when they confronted him on the station platform. The officers then used their tasers in an attempt to arrest the suspect, Filippi said. The suspect was still uncooperative even after officers used their stun guns on him, and officers used a restraint “wrap” to control him, Filippi said.  The box cutter was recovered.

No one else was injured and the suspect  was going to be taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, officials said.

BART police investigators were interviewing witnesses. The train was taken out of service and there were 10 minute delays on the BART system.
