OAKLAND — The June 27 armed heist of an armored truck outside an East Oakland bank where more than $100,000 in cash was stolen was an “inside job” that has resulted in robbery and other charges being filed against a guard driving the vehicle that day and his uncle, according to authorities and court records.

The girlfriend of the guard has been also been charged in the case with helping hide the money and other suspects are being sought, authorities said.

Three people were arrested and 11 firearms were recovered by Oakland Police following a June 2019 armored truck robbery. Oakland Police

Charged with second degree robbery in the Loomis Armored Car Company truck robbery are Damien Jackson, 23, who authorities said was driving the truck that day, and his uncle Duane Jackson, 35. Damien Jackson is from San Leandro and his uncle lives in Oakland.

According to court records Damien Jackson has admitted his involvement in the robbery.

Although police never released the exact amount of cash taken, according to a special allegation contained in the criminal complaint against the pair, the loss was over $100,000. Authorities said some of the stolen money was used to buy vehicles and a motorcycle.

Duane Jackson, a convicted felon, is also charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, and illegal possession of body armor.  Damien Jackson is also charged with possession of an assault rifle and third degree criminal firearm storage.

Damien Jackson’s girlfriend, Mercadiez Moore, 25, who authorities said aided the suspects afterward, is charged with receiving stolen property and third degree criminal firearm storage.

Some of the stolen money has been recovered, but authorities have not said how much.

Police Lt. Steve Nowak, commander of the robbery unit,  credited investigators Officer Michael Khem and Officer Jorge Garcia, who he said “worked tirelessly with specialized units in identifying the responsible persons in this crime which resulted in key arrests, confessions and a cache of illegal firearms.”

As part of the investigation, nine search warrants were served, many by the police department’s Tactical Team. With the assistance of other law enforcement agencies, warrants were served in Oakland, San Leandro, Antioch and Stockton.

A total of 11 firearms were recovered, among them handguns, shotguns, rifles and assault rifles, police said.

Duane Jackson was arrested Oct. 16 at his East Oakland home where police recovered three handguns and a rifle. According to court documents he admitted owning the rifle. Damien Jackson and Moore were arrested Oct. 17 at the San Leandro apartment where they lived.

Three handguns and two rifles, all unregistered, were found at the apartment, according to court documents. Another handgun was found inside a car Moore was driving.

The robbery happened about 10:50 a.m. June 27 in a parking lot outside a Wells Fargo Bank branch in the Foothill Square Shopping Center, 10700 MacArthur Blvd. where a delivery of cash was about to be made. Authorities said Damien Jackson was driving the armored truck.

Two masked men, one armed with an assault rifle and the other with a pistol, confronted Damien Jackson and the truck’s other guard and fled with the cash in a car.  Authorities said Duane Jackson was one of the masked robbers and police are still  trying to identify the second man.

No one was injured and the robbers never entered the bank.  Loomis did not return phone calls seeking comment Tuesday.

According to court documents, Duane Jackson has two prior felony convictions, one for first degree residential burglary in Sacramento County in December 2009 and another for second degree burglary in Contra Costa County in December 2009.  He was placed on probation in both cases.

Duane Jackson is being held in lieu of $635,000  bail and Damien Jackson is being held in lieu of $230,000.  Moore is free on $40,000 bail. They are all scheduled to appear in court Nov. 22 to enter pleas.

Oakland police thanked other agencies for their support and assistance in the investigation.  They include the FBI Tactical Team, the United States Marshals Tactical Team, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the California State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Team.

Reward money is still available  in the case. Oakland police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of other suspects and Loomis is offering up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects. anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3326.

Statewide fencing operation busted by Fremont police

$

FREMONT — A major fencing operation involving businesses in Hayward and El Cajon that specialized in buying and reselling cell phones and other electronics stolen during robberies and burglaries — including sales to people in foreign countries, has been broken up by Fremont police, authorities said Friday.

Eight people have been arrested so far and approximately $350,000 in cash, 1,800 stolen electronic devices and two shotguns and two pistols have been recovered.

Police have charged these four men so far as a result of an investigation into a state-wide fencing operation. (Fremont Police Department)

Police said in their release that evidence found indicates the vast majority of the phones were being shipped to countries such as Dubai, Vietnam, Mexico, China, Russia, Iran and many others.

The targets of the investigation, which involved the assistance of other law enforcement agencies and the serving of eight search warrants on Oct. 25, were two businesses: Torspin Wireless in Hayward and MJ Wireless in El Cajon.

Police said as part of ongoing efforts to combat the rise in vehicle burglaries involving the loss of electronics, investigators developed information that Torspin Wireless was the largest electronics fence for stolen property in the Bay Area.  The release said “through hundreds of hours of surveillance, detectives were able to confirm the business was conducting illegal activity and their methods were actually driving crime in the region, specifically robberies of high end cellular phones and auto burglaries.”

The release referenced the arrest of 12 men and women in August by Oakland police and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office who are suspected of being members of an Oakland based robbery crew that specialized in stealing new phones, primarily iPhones, from FedEx and UPS trucks.  That investigation involved 62 robberies or grand thefts in 31 cities across 10 counties with a retail loss  of about $1 million.

One of those arrested and charged in that case was Isaiah Langley, 22, a former East Bay high school football star who was briefly with  the Oakland Raiders in June and July while two of the heists were done. Authorities said some of the suspects in that case, including Langley, were seen and filmed by law enforcement selling the stolen phones to Torspin almost immediately after several of the robberies.

The release said that through the course of the investigation detectives learned Torspin was working with and being financed by MJ Wireless.

Fremont police Lt. Michael Tegner said the businesses posted Google documents for so-called “preferred customers” that gave a range of prices they would pay for phones and other electronics.  Prices ranged from several hundred dollars to more than $1,000 for iPhone 11 models. He said the prices changed every day.  “It was like the stock market.”

Detectives did multiple surveillance operations on the business and conducted eight undercover buy/sell operations between the two stores, selling a total of 145 reported stolen phones for more than $45,000 to the stores, the release said.

On the day the search warrants were served, undercover detectives coordinated the sale of 900 reportedly stolen iPhone 11’s with a retail value of $1.3 million to MJ Wireless and Torspin Wireless during which the eight suspects were arrested. Four of those arrested have been formally charged so far with attempted possession of stolen property, according to court records..

They were identified by police as Muhibullah Nuristani, his brother Mujibullah Nuristani of El Cajon, and Bay Area residents Mohammed Mustafa and Abdul Janah.  Authorities said Muhibullah Nuristani ran MJ Wireless where his brother worked and was listed as the chief financial officer for Torstin Wireless. The other two are associated with Torstin Wireless, authorities said.

None of the suspects or anyone from the businesses could be reached for comment Friday.

Four search warrants were served in Hayward, one in San Lorenzo, one in San Francisco and two in El Cajon, which involved the participation and coordination of nine law enforcement agencies and to private companies, the release said.

Tegner said in the release  that “we are pleased with the results of this investigation.  However, these results could have not been achieved without the help of partner agencies throughout the state.  We know these fencing operations and the high price they pay for cell phones drive the auto burglary epidemic in the Bay Area.  We are hoping these arrests  help to lower the crime rate.”

Assisting in the investigation were the Hayward and San Jose police departments, the Alameda County and San Diego County sheriff’s offices, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, the Internal Revenue Service, Silicon Valley Regional Computer Forensic Lab and the San Diego Regional Compute Forensic Lab.

The police investigation is continuing.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fremont Police Department’s Investigative Division (General Crimes) at 510-790-6900 or email Detective J. Roberts at Jroberts@fremont.gov.  Anonymous tips will also be accepted.  To do that text TIP FREMONTPD followed by  your message to 888-777, or via the web at https://local.nixle.com/tip/alert/6216337.

Friends shocked by shooting death of pregnant mother in Oakland

OAKLAND — Misty Smith Walton was happily looking forward to the birth of her third child, a girl who would be a little sister to two older brothers.

But the family’s joy and dreams have been replaced by horror and heartbreak, as the 29-year-old woman, who friends said was six months pregnant, was killed in a hail of bullets outside her East Oakland home Saturday night in a shooting that left her husband wounded. The unborn child also died.

Friends said the couple had apparently come outside their home in the 3500 block of 65th Avenue about 8 p.m. Saturday after hearing someone possibly trying to break into their car. Someone unleashed a barrage of bullets at them, but police don’t know if the shooter was in a vehicle or confronted them on the street.

Smith Walton died at the scene from her wounds, while her wounded husband was taken to a hospital. Her two sons, ages 8 and 11, were being cared for by relatives.

Police have scoured the neighborhood looking for video surveillance and anything that can help them identify the shooter. No motive has been determined yet and no arrests have been made.

Smith Walton’s death has left family and friends shocked and devastated.

Robin Fross of Richmond, who became friends with Smith Walton a few years ago when Smith Walton worked at the now-closed Curves fitness center in El Cerrito, said she was “a tremendously warm and friendly person, engaging everyone in conversation, so supportive and fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She was a natural leader, bright and vocal, always encouraging and a wonderful mother.”

She said Smith Walton sometimes brought her sons with her to work and that occasionally her husband would also drop by: “You could just tell there was so much love in the family. It’s so tragic.”

Smith Walton was in her second term as president of the Parents Teachers Association at Oakland’s Carl B. Munck Elementary School, a school that her younger son attends and where her older son had also gone. Grief counselors were at the school Tuesday, district spokesman John Sasaki said.

Sasaki said Smith Walton was “incredibly dedicated. Her kids were her life. She was always supporting her kids, she was always supporting the school. If anyone ever needed anything, she would be the first to step up and help out.”

Sasaki said her death, especially in such a senseless way, is “devastating, not only to the school community but to the entire city.”

In a GoFundMe fund-raising account established to help toward the care of her children, a friend wrote “Misty left a smile that will never go away.” As of Tuesday afternoon, the account had raised $4,419 toward a goal of $8,000.
