RICHMOND — Three men attending a family barbecue were wounded in a drive-by shooting Wednesday night, police said Thursday.

The three, who are 19 years old, 20, and 21, were in stable condition at a hospital Thursday and expected to survive. The shooting happened at 7:13 p.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of Marina Way South.

Officers responding to a ShotSpotter activation found a group of people in a carport including the three gunshot victims. According to police, it was not determined Thursday afternoon whether the three victims were related.

Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy said about 10-15 people were gathered in the carport of a residence for a barbecue, when a light-colored vehicle approached the residence and stopped. The barbecue was described as a family event.

“They’re in their own carport, so essentially, it’s like being in a front yard. It’s the same equivalent,” Pomeroy said. “Some of the residents we talked to said it was a belated Easter celebration.”

As the people practiced physical distancing, police said, somebody got out of the car and began shooting.

“It was targeted,” Pomeroy said. “Whoever these suspects are, one of them gets out and begins shooting into the carport area. So this is not a case where a vehicle goes speeding by spraying shots.”

The person got back in the vehicle, which then fled northbound on Marina Way South. Police were investigating whether anybody at the barbecue fired at the suspects, Pomeroy said.

One man who suffered a gunshot to his upper torso was flown by air ambulance to a local
trauma center. The other two men, who were wounded in their extremities, were taken to local hospitals for
treatment.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting or announced any arrests.
