Standoff ends between Oakland police and occupants of vehicle that contained a gun

OAKLAND — A more than two-hour standoff Thursday morning  between police and two occupants of a crashed vehicle that contained a gun ended with the two men finally  exiting the vehicle,  authorities said.

The standoff began at about 7:12 a.m. Thursday after the vehicle crashed into a light pole in the 4000 block of Edwards Avenue near the eastbound Interstate 580 off ramp.

California Highway Patrol officers were the first on the scene and saw a gun inside the vehicle.

They called for police who responded to the scene with SWAT team members, negotiators and an armored vehicle.  A medical crew also stood by.

Officers could see the two occupants moving inside the vehicle and began trying to get them to obey commands and directions to exit the vehicle which they initially refused.

But they finally complied at 9:49 a.m. and were detained, authorities said. They declined medical attention, police said. .

Streets in the area as well as the off ramp were closed during the standoff.
