OAKLAND — A man riding on a BART train Tuesday evening was hospitalized after an apparent unprovoked attack by another passenger, officials said Wednesday.

The suspect is being sought.

The attack happened just after 6 p.m. on board a Daly City bound train as it traveled through Oakland.

BART spokesman James Allison said the attack happened after the suspect asked the victim for directions.

The victim was punched and also struck with what may have been a bicycle lock, officials said. A witness told police the attack was unprovoked, Allison said.

The suspect fled the train when it stopped at the Lake Merritt Station and the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.  His age and condition were not available.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 30s who was wearing a white t-shirt, black sweatpants and a beanie. He was also carrying  two plastic bags.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call BART police at 510-464-7040 or the anonymous tip line at 510-464-7011.

Check back for updates.
