OAKLAND — A shooting Monday morning on Interstate 580 in East Oakland wounded a man who was a passenger in the targeted vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was initially reported to be in extremely critical condition. A CHP spokesman said Monday afternoon that the man was still being treated for serious injuries.

Two young girls, ages 1 and 4, who were also in the Infiniti, were not injured; neither was the woman who was driving.

All the occupants are related, authorities said.

The shooting was reported about 9:56 a.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes of I-580 near Keller Avenue.

CHP Officer Kris Borer said initial reports were that two masked suspects in a white SUV with a hatchback pulled alongside the vehicle the other people were in and began shooting at them.

The man was the only one wounded and the driver pulled off the freeway at Keller, stopped on the street and contacted authorities.

A woman who resides in the area and declined to give her name started helping tend to the man’s wounds.  “He was bleeding from his mouth, neck and ear,” she told a journalist.  “He just wasn’t in good shape.”

She said she and the other woman were able to put pressure on the wounds and stop the bleeding until  an ambulance arrived.

No motive has been released yet for the attack and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the CHP at 510-457-2875.
