OAKLAND — Four residents escaped injury Monday morning when a fire caused extensive damage to their East Oakland home, officials said.

The fire erupted about 12:47 a.m. Monday at the two-story house in the 2100 block of 102nd Avenue near Bancroft Avenue.

The four residents, all adults, were able to get out on their own before firefighters arrived on scene, Battalion Chief Frank Tijiboy said.

Seventeen firefighters had the single-alarm blaze  under control at 1:09 a.m.  No firefighters were injured.

Tijiboy said the preliminary cause of the fire is accidental with it starting as a result of combustibles too close to a water heater.

He did not have a monetary amount of damage to the house but said it was “pretty extensive” and that the residents would not be able to return “anytime soon.”

The residents were being assisted by the Red Cross.
