OAKLAND — An 18-year-old woman who was hospitalized for smoke inhalation was among six residents displaced after a fire at their East Oakland home late Monday night, officials said Tuesday.

Officials said the fire started about 11:04 p.m. Monday in a rear bedroom of the two-story house in the 1800 block of 96th Avenue just north of Cherry Street.

Battalion Fire Chief Frank Tijiboy said when firefighters arrived on the scene the six adult residents were already outside along with two pet dogs.

He said a large amount of smoke was coming from the front of the house and flames were spewing from the area where the fire started.

The fire was brought under control by 11:30 p.m. by 21 firefighters. No firefighters were injured.

The 18-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, officials said. Her condition was not immediately available.

Tijiboy said the cause of the fire was accidental. He did not have a monetary loss estimate but said  the residents would not be able to return to the house soon.

The Red Cross was aiding those displaced.
