OAKLAND — A man was killed Wednesday night in East Oakland when he was hit by an Amtrak train while he was walking on the railroad tracks, officials said.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office was working to identify the man Thursday.

The fatality happened about 9:44 p.m. Wednesday on railroad tracks in the area of 66th Avenue and San Leandro Street near the Coliseum.

Amtrak officials said the man was on the tracks when he was struck by Coast Starlight Train 14, which was en route to Seattle from Los Angeles. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Amtrak said none of the 207 passengers and crew on board the train were injured.

Authorities were trying to determine why the man was on the tracks.

The train was delayed for several hours while investigators were at the scene.
