OAKLAND — A man was fatally shot Saturday morning outside a West Oakland homeless compound, authorities said.
Authorities have not yet been able to identify the man. Nobody at the compound was involved in the incident, Mayor’s Office spokesman Justin Berton confirmed.
Police responding to a Shot Spotter alert and a call about a shooting found the man dead about 3:14 a.m. Saturday at the southwest corner of 27th Street and Northgate Avenue, across the street from the entrances to both Highway 24 and Interstate 580.
The man was next to a fence that surrounds the Northgate Tuff Shed compound of converted utility sheds recently installed to house the homeless.
Investigators are trying to determine a motive for the killing. No arrests have been made.
Northbound lanes of Northgate between 26th and 27th streets and a part of eastbound 27th Street were closed while police investigated.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
