HAYWARD — A 42-year-old man fatally shot Sunday morning outside a motel was identified by relatives Wednesday as Brent Vicens, known for his willingness to help others.

A relative who asked not to be named since the case is still open, said Vicens, of Hayward, was the oldest of seven children.

The relative said Vicens “had a big heart. He was a loving, caring individual who would take the shirt off his back to help anybody. It’s what I really admired about him.”

Vicens graduated from San Lorenzo High School in 1996 and even though he was most recently unemployed had worked as a salesman, waiter and warehouseman, the relative said. He had no children.

Vicens became Hayward’s first homicide of the year when he was fatally wounded just before 2 a.m. Sunday outside the Vagabond Inn, 500 West A St. Police have said a dark four-door sedan pulled up and a man inside shot Vicens several times. The gunman was described as Latino, in his 30s to 40s, with black hair and brown eyes and who was wearing framed glasses.

No motive has been determined yet and no arrests made in the case.

The relative said  the family is devastated by his killing and is looking for answers. “I have no idea. I’m trying to figure that out myself,” the relative said.

Anyone with information about the killing  is asked to call Detective Mulhern at 510-293-7034.
