SAN LEANDRO — A man was killed and a woman badly injured early Wednesday morning when the SUV they were in crashed on Interstate 880, authorities said.
The man’s name has not been released pending notification of his family, the coroner’s office said.
The crash happened about 1:08 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-880 between Marina Boulevard and Davis Street, the California Highway Patrol said.
CHP Officer Dustin Kennerly said the SUV veered off the freeway and crashed into an embankment, causing both occupants to be ejected.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transported to a hospital and was in critical condition.
Who was driving the vehicle has not been determined, the CHP said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The crash resulted in the closing of three freeway lanes while the CHP investigated. All lanes were reopened just before 4 a.m.
