OAKLAND — A North Oakland Safeway market and a parking lot were evacuated Friday morning after what appeared to be a possible pipe bomb was found in a shopping cart at the store, authorities said.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad later determined it was not a pipe bomb but a large piece of electrical conduit that looked like one, sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly said. The store was reopened about 9:15 a.m.
Who left the device is under investigation.
The device was found in a cart inside the store at 5100 Broadway about 7:18 a.m. Friday, authorities said.
Police responded to the scene and evacuated the store, which is part of the The Ridge shopping center, as well as the parking lot and called the bomb squad.
Officers searched the store and parking lot looking for other possible devices but could not find any, authorities said.
