BERKELEY — A man who apparently was upset seeing a 74-year-old man walking a dog is suspected of stabbing the man repeatedly Sunday night and biting another man who tried to intervene before being arrested, authorities said Monday.
The suspect was identified as Ogun Sefu Chidke Jumoke, 52, a transient who is also known as John Hardin. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and battery with serious bodily injury and is being held without bail.
Both the 74-year-old man stabbed and a 32-year-old man who tried to intervene were hospitalized. Their conditions were not available Monday but authorities said the older man was in an intensive care unit.
Police said the confrontation happened about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of University Avenue after Jumoke saw the older man, who uses a cane, walking a dog.
Officer Byron White said Jumoke did not know the older man and just “took issue” with him walking the dog “for whatever reason.”
The two got into a physical altercation and the dog walker was stabbed several times in the torso, police said. The 32-year-old man heard the commotion, and was bitten by Jumoke after he tried to tackle him, police said.
Jumoke fled the scene but was arrested a short time later, in the area of Tenth and Delaware streets.
The dog was not hurt and was being cared for by a relative while his owner is hospitalized, authorities said. They did not say what kind of dog it is.
