PLEASANTON — Firefighters needed more than an hour Tuesday morning to control a two-alarm blaze at the vacant site of a former restaurant, authorities said.

The fire started about  9:23 a.m. at a building that authorities said once housed a Denny’s restaurant at the intersection of Johnson Court and Owens Drive near Hopyard Road.  The building has been vacant several years, officials said.

Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department Deputy Chief of  Operations Aaron Lacey said when firefighters first got on the scene “lots of flames and smoke” were spewing from the building.

He said some firefighters initially went inside the building to fight the fire, but they were brought out because of safety concerns.

A second alarm was called about 9:33 a.m.

Fifty firefighters from the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and the Alameda County Fire Department had the fire under control about 10:45 a.m.  officials said. There were no reported injuries.

Firefighters remained on the scene making sure there were no flareups. They were being assisted in that effort by drones from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.  Lacey said the fire is considered “suspicious” mainly because the building was vacant.  He said the fire is under investigation by his department and Pleasanton police.

Streets in the area were shut down while the fire was being fought.

Check back for updates.
