OAKLAND — Two men suspected of robbing a coin store in the Grand Lake District got away after firing shots at the store’s owner and avoiding shots fired back at them, police said.
A resident in the area suffered a gunshot wound and was in stable condition at a hospital, police said. Police are investigating the robbery, which went down just before 10 a.m. at the Northern California Coin Exchange at 3356 Grand Avenue.
According to the store’s owner, the two men entered and at least one of them had a gun. After the robbery, the two ran up Elwood Avenue, across the street from the store.
The two suspects opened gunfire as they ran, and the store’s owner said he fired back.
“When they ran out the door, I ran after them,” Charles Mammoser said. “When they shot at me, I shot at them. It was self-preservation.”
The suspects dropped most of the coins as they escaped, and Mammoser was able to recover most of them.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to a $7,500 reward for information leading to arrests in the robbery. Police can be reached at 510-238-3326, and Crime Stoppers can be reached at 510-777-8572.
