DUBLIN — A 16-year-old Hayward boy was arrested Wednesday evening in the robbery of a cell phone from a passenger on a BART train  heading into Dublin, authorities said Thursday.

The victim was not injured even though the youth tried to punch him when he tried to get the phone back.

The robbery happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on a Dublin/Pleasanton bound BART train as it approached the West Dublin/Pleasanton Station.

BART spokeswoman Anna Duckworth said the youth snatched a cell phone from a 46-year-old man and fled from the train when it stopped at the station with the victim chasing him.

They both ran back onto the train and when the man tried to grab his phone back, the suspect attempted to punch him but not hit him, Duckworth said.

When the train stopped at the Dublin/Pleasanton Station the victim got off the and alerted a station agent that the youth was still upstairs at the station. He was arrested by BART police and the phone was recovered, Duckworth said.

The youth was booked at Alameda County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of robbery of a train passenger.
