MARTINEZ — A brush fire that briefly threatened some homes was controlled Friday afternoon after burning 24 acres, officials said.

Although the exact cause remains under investigation, fireworks “are a distinct possibility,” Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesman Steve Hill said.

The fire was reported about 12:10 p.m. Friday in the 2700 block of Franklin Canyon Road in a grassy area above the roadway.

It quickly spread and some structures, including some homes were briefly threatened but eventually saved, officials said.

Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters working with Cal Fire firefighters on the ground and in the air “hit the fire hard” and had it contained about 1:20 p.m, Hill said.  Firefighters planned to be on the scene for hours doing extensive mop-up, Hill said.

No injuries were reported

Hill reminded people that there are “high risk fire conditions” in the county and it was no time for anyone to “act irresponsibly” when it comes to fire safety.
