OAKLAND — A man died Tuesday afternoon after his car crashed into a parked vehicle in North Oakland, police said.
Authorities are trying to determine if the man suffered a medical issue before the crash.
Officer Johnna Watson said the man was driving northbound in the 4000 block of Telegraph Avenue about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday when he passed out, crossed into the opposite lanes of traffic and hit a parked truck. A relative of the man who was also in the car was not hurt.
Officers David Parrish and Giovanni LoVerde were in the area, heard the crash and quickly responded. When they arrived, the car’s driver side door was pinned against the truck. Watson said the officers put the car in neutral, moved it about 10 feet before they could put it in park, then had to cut the man out of his seat belt to remove him before starting CPR.
Paramedics arrived and took over medical aid before the man was taken to a hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead at 1:39 p.m.
Watson said even though the outcome was not what police had hoped for, she praised the officers’ efforts to try and save the man. “This is just another example of what our officers do on a daily basis to serve our community,” she said.
The intersection was shut down while police investigated and traffic was being diverted.
