DANVILLE — A 15-year-old boy died Tuesday after being found unresponsive in the pool at San Ramon Valley High School, authorities said.
The teenager, who authorities said was a student at the school, was not immediately identified.
Danville police officers and San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched to the campus about 1:50 p.m. for a report of a possible drowning, authorities said.
When they arrived, a staff member had already pulled the boy from the water and started life-saving measures, said police Chief Allan Shields. Paramedics rushed the boy to Kaiser Permanente hospital in Walnut Creek, where he was later pronounced dead.
A witness told KGO-TV, this news organization’s media partner, the boy was spotted at the bottom of the pool just as a 5th period PE class was starting. Fellow students and teachers jumped in to help him.
Aidan Vaupen, a student at the school, said he last saw the boy laughing in the locker room.
“Nothing seemed wrong with him,” Aidan said.
Julia Item, another student, described the boy as “really sweet.” As students struggled to make sense of the death, a memorial for the boy started to take shape outside the pool. KGO-TV reported that grief counselors would be at the school Wednesday.
Students were placed on a temporary lockdown during the emergency as a precaution. They were dismissed about 3 p.m., the time that classes usually end for the day.
Police are investigating the drowning.
