OAKLAND — A man who turned out to have a knife and not a gun as witnesses first reported, was arrested Thursday morning after brandishing the weapon in a Bay Bridge toll plaza parking lot, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man, whose name and age were not released, was eventually arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, authorities said.

The CHP first began receiving calls about 5:40 a.m. Thursday of a man waving a gun in the west parking lot at the toll plaza.

CHP officers responded and confronted the man, who was getting in and out of a vehicle and “acting strangely,” Officer Herman Baza said. Officers did not see a weapon at the time even though he continued to reach into his waistband, authorities said.

The man was eventually detained and officers recovered a knife from him, Baza said. No gun was found.

The suspect was not injured nor were any officers.

The confrontation did not disrupt traffic, authorities said.

Anyone who saw the man at the time is asked to call the CHP at 1-800-TELLCHP.
