OAKLAND — Two suspects were arrested, one after a four-hour search, after a police pursuit Friday morning ended in a crash and knocked down power lines off Interstate 580 in the Oakland hills near Mills College, authorities said.
Police would only initially say the suspects were wanted for felonies.
It was not immediately known exactly where the chase began, but Oakland police units started pursuing the vehicle the suspects were in just after 11 a.m. Friday.
The chase merged onto the westbound lanes of I-580. The suspects’ vehicle exited the freeway at Seminary Avenue, then crashed into a power pole at Mountain Boulevard and Mountain View Avenue, authorities said.
PG&E officials said 306 customers in the area initially lost power; as of 3:15 p.m., 175 were still without power. Officials did not know when all power would be restored, as crews had to replace the damaged pole.
Two men fled on foot from the vehicle, traveling south on Seminary, officials said. One of them may have briefly gotten onto the grounds of Mills College.
One suspect was detained in the area about 11:30 a.m.
The second was arrested about 3:30 p.m. after police set up a perimeter that closed several streets and searched for him using drones from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, K-9s and a CHP helicopter. The Seminary Avenue off-ramp was also shut.
