OAKLAND — Two men, one who was hit by two vehicles that kept going, were killed in traffic collisions three hours apart Thursday in different areas of Oakland, police said Friday.
The hit-and-run death happened about 5:20 p.m. Thursday in the 1300 block of 85th Avenue.
Police said a 72-year-old Oakland man, whose name has not been released, was walking east across 85th Avenue when he was first hit by a white pickup truck going south on 85th. The driver kept going, police said.
While the man was lying injured in the middle of the roadway, he was hit again by a red SUV that was also driving south on 85th, police said. That driver also kept going, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the death. Detailed descriptions of the drivers that drove off were not released.
The other fatality happened about 2:25 p.m. Thursday in the 8000 block of Mountain Boulevard.
Police said a 63-year-old man, a non-Oakland resident whose name was not released, was standing near his parked vehicle when he lost his balance for some reason and fell into the westbound lane of traffic on Mountain.
He was hit by a 2006 Ford Explorer SUV that was driving west on Mountain, police said. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators, police said.
Police are still trying to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
A woman critically injured by a hit-and-run driver Wednesday night in East Oakland remained unidentified in a hospital Friday and the suspect was still being sought, police said.
The woman was hit by a 1990s Ford Mustang, dark in color, about 8:18 p.m. Wednesday in the 2900 block of High Street near Penniman Avenue as she was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. The driver did not stop and continued driving the Mustang south on High Street.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the drivers who failed to stop after hitting the 72-year-old man and up to $5,000 in reward money in the High Street hit-and-run.
