HAYWARD — An exploding electrical transformer injured a PG&E worker and knocked out power to more than 400 customers Wednesday night.
The condition of the employee, who was taken to a hospital, was not available Thursday.
The employee had responded by himself to a voltage problem on Santa Clara Street near Ocie Way about 9 p.m. Wednesday, officials said. Around 10:15 p.m., a transformer exploded, injuring the employee and causing a power pole, PG&E truck and another vehicle to catch fire, police said.
Sgt. Greg Velasquez said Thursday a shelter in place order for residents in the area was temporarily issued.
PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said Thursday a power outage resulted affecting 402 customers. The majority had their power restored overnight but 18 customers remained without power until 1 p.m. Thursday, Sarkissian said.
Sarkissian said the incident is being investigated.
