OAKLAND — A 24-year-old man was in critical condition Wednesday after he was struck while crossing a street Tuesday night in the Eastlake district, authorities said.

The collision happened about 10:35 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of East 12th Street and Seventh Avenue.

Police said the man was crossing in the 600 block of East 12th Street at mid-block when he was hit by a red Hyundai Accent that was traveling east.

The Hyundai driver fled on foot before police arrived. The pedestrian, who was bleeding and unconscious, was treated at the scene by firefighters and paramedics before being transported to a hospital.

Police said the Hyundai driver was later located and arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run driving and driving under the influence. His name has not been released, and police did not say where he was arrested.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
