OAKLAND – A married couple have both been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of a 31-year-old man over the weekend in East Oakland, according to authorities and court records.
The husband, Paula Faaui, 21, the suspected shooter, has been charged with murder, authorities said. His 26-year-old wife, Sariah Faaui, has been charged with being an accessory after the fact, according to court records.
According to authorities and the documents, both suspects have allegedly admitted their involvement.
Paula Faaui is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail; Sariah Faaui was being held on $10,000 bail. Both are scheduled to enter pleas Sept. 13.
The man killed, Julian Carillo-Garcia, 31, was shot just before 6 p.m. Sunday outside a laundromat in the 5800 block of Bancroft Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe he was killed in an attempted robbery gone bad. The suspects did not know him, police said.
Homicide investigators were able to identify Paula Faaui as the suspected shooter from witness statements and surveillance video, the documents say. It was later determined his wife was in a nearby vehicle at the time of the killing, waiting for him.
Before her arrest, Sariah Faaui phoned police to claim the vehicle had been stolen, authorities said. Both allegedly admitted their involvement after their arrests Monday afternoon in Oakland.
Police are investigating if the couple may have been involved in other robberies.
According to court documents, at the time of the killing, Paula Faaui was free on bail pending prosecution for a May 28 arrest in Oakland where he was charged with discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and carrying a loaded firearm on one’s person in a city. The bail amount and details of the May 28 incident were not immediately available.
