OAKLAND — A man who apparently was running across Interstate 880 suffered fatal injuries Sunday night when he was hit by a vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.
The man’s name was not immediately released.
The fatal collision happened about 11:13 p.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes of I-880, north of 29th Avenue.
The man was apparently trying to run across the freeway from the south shoulder when he was struck by a car in the number two lane and ended up in the lane closest to the center divider, the CHP said.
CHP Officer Adib Zeid said CHP officers provided first aid to the injured man at the scene before he was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The CHP was notified by the hospital at 12:12 a.m. Monday that the man had died, Zeid said.
Zeid said the driver that hit the man remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The southbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for about 15 minutes while the CHP investigated and were completely reopened by 11:45 p.m.
