OAKLAND — A 31-year-old man fatally shot June 24 in East Oakland has been identified by police as Ebon Burton.

Burton, who authorities said was unhoused, was shot about 10:55 p.m. June 24 in a parking lot at a small commercial strip mall in the 6200 block of International Boulevard. He died at the scene.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined. No arrests have been announced in the killing.

Burton was a familiar face in the area and his violent death was disturbing to those who knew him.

Police were told he was a loner who kept to himself, but was never a problem to others. People would occasionally give him food, authorities said.

A restaurant worker who knew him said he was not the friendliest person but “he didn’t have any problems with anyone and he didn’t bother anyone.

“This is just sad,” she added.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
