BYRON — One person was killed and three others injured Wednesday afternoon in a head-on crash on Vasco Road, officials said.

The wreck happened just before 2 p.m. on Vasco Road, south of Camino Diablo, on the outskirts of Byron.

A Dodge Ram was traveling southbound on Vasco Road when it crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a Toyota Tacoma, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Dodge then overturned and was struck by a Chevrolet Express traveling northbound.

The CHP said the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the crash site. The driver of the Dodge suffered major injuries, while a passenger in the Dodge and the driver of the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman Steve Hill said two of the injured were airlifted to a hospital while another was taken by ambulance. At least two people had to be extricated from the damaged vehicles, he said.

Initially, ConFire reported that up to 10 people were hurt in the multi-vehicle crash but the agency later corrected that information.

Vasco Road was closed to accommodate the victims being removed from the vehicles and transported to hospitals. Around 4:15 p.m., the fire district announced the scene was clear.

The CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it to contact the CHP Contra Costa area office at 925-646-4980 or 320investigations@chp.ca.gov.
