OAKLAND — A man who sexually assaulted a woman Monday morning in an Adams Point building was able to elude capture despite a lengthy police search, authorities said.
The assault happened about 11:30 a.m. Monday in a building in the area of Grand Avenue and Bay Street near Lake Merritt. Police said the suspect entered a building and forced a female victim into a restroom before assaulting her.
The suspect fled on foot after the attack into the surrounding residential area north of Grand Avenue.
Officers on the ground and in the air responded to the area looking for the man but the search was called off by 2 p.m. with no arrest made.
In a statement Monday night, police released images taken from surveillance camera footage of a suspect, describing him as African American, between 25 to 30 years old, about 5-foot-10 and 140 pounds with a beard and a tattoo on his left hand.
In those images, the suspect is wearing a neon yellow cap, black jacket, black graphic T-shirt with a white design on its front, blue jeans, black sneakers with yellow stripes on the sides, a distinctive gold chain necklace with diamonds, and a tattoo on his left hand.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in the assault.
