OAKLAND — A man died in East Oakland Wednesday night after he was found pinned between the door of a stolen pickup truck and a power pole, police said,.
Police were trying to confirm the man’s name and determine where he lived. He appeared to be in his 30s.
The man was found about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday in the 2600 block of 75th Avenue, pinned between the driver side door of a Ford F350 pickup truck and a power pole, police said. Paramedics provided emergency aid but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, which is in a residential area near Garfield Avenue and not far from the Eastmont Town Center.
An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death, authorities said.
Police said the preliminary investigation indicated the truck was stolen, but did not say from where or when or if the man killed was a suspect in the theft.
Police said the man was possibly working on the truck and apparently was leaning inside the driver’s side with the door open and the lower part of his body outside the vehicle. While the man was leaning in, the truck rolled backward pinning him between the door and power pole, police said. Police have not said how far the truck rolled before hitting the pole.
The truck was later found to be in the reverse gear position, police said.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident, police said.
The death remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police Traffic Investigation Unit at 510- 777-8570.
