HAYWARD — Five boys ages 15 to 17 have been arrested  in the attempted strong arm robbery Wednesday of a woman near Southland Mall, authorities said Friday.

The suspects were arrested in a vehicle that had been carjacked in Oakland earlier in the day, authorities said.

The robbery happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday near the mall.  The suspects tried to take the purse of a woman in her 60s but she was able to hold onto it despite being pushed to the pavement, Officer Cassondra Fovel said. The woman suffered some minor injuries.

A Hayward police officer spotted it and a pursuit started.

The suspects were arrested in the vehicle after it became disabled in the northbound lanes of Interstate 880 near Davis Street when it hit the center divider, police said.

Authorities said the van had been carjacked at Norton Avenue and Wisconsin Street in Oakland’s Upper Dimond district about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.  The owner was forcibly dragged from the vehicle by several suspects who then drove away in it.

The five were arrested on suspicion of carjacking, attempted robbery and evading police and were booked at Alameda County Juvenile Hall.

Authorities said the teens are being investigated as possible suspects in other East Bay robberies and carjackings.

The arrests marked the second time this week in Alameda County that male juveniles have been arrested in robberies.

An 11-year-old and a 17-year-old were arrested Wednesday afternoon in the Saturday robberies in San Leandro of an 80-year-old man who was knocked to the pavement and had his watch stolen and a 19-year-old woman.
