Two recent Oakland homicide victims identified

OAKLAND — Two men fatally shot in recent East Oakland residential area homicides were identified by police Thursday.

A man fatally shot about 3:46 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of East 27th Street and 26th Avenue was identified as Mark Downs, 49, a transient.

He was found on the sidewalk and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No motive has been determined yet in the killing and no arrests have been made, police said.

A man fatally shot about 12:42 a.m. Friday, May 7,  near his home in the 2300 block of 55th Avenue was identified as 62-year-old Ernesto Ortega.

He was apparently confronted by someone as he was walking home from a store and shot.  A motive has not been determined yet and no arrests have been made.

Police don’t believe the killings are related.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money in each killing for information leading to the arrests of the suspects.  Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
