OAKLAND — Streets in the Eastlake area were beginning to open Monday night after police managed to convince a man with a gun barricaded inside a camper to surrender after a multi-hour standoff, authorities said.

Police encountered the man Monday morning while they were doing follow-up investigation in the stabbing death of a 52-year-old Hayward man that happened at about 9:54 p.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of Seventh Avenue.

The man refused to come out of the camper, which was parked on Eighth Avenue, and SWAT officers were requested to the scene just after 2 p.m. while police negotiators continued to talk to the man.

“Officers were following up on a homicide that occurred on Saturday,” Oakland police strategic communications manager Paul Chambers said. “Once officers contacted the suspect and attempted to take him into custody, the man barricaded himself and then confronted them with a rifle.”

Outside the police-installed perimeter, Jay Nguyen said his parents were shopping at the nearby Sun Sang supermarket when officers informed them an armed man was in the area.

“I was worried for my parents,” said Nguyen, who rushed over to escort his parents to safety from the store parking lot behind the camper.

Numerous streets in the area, including portions of East 12th Street and International Boulevard were shut down while police were on scene.

“A nearly seven hour standoff ends with a homicide suspect in custody,” police said in a social-media post crediting the department’s armored rescue vehicle and Alameda County sheriff’s deputies with help.

No injuries were reported.

Staff writers George Kelly and Dylan Bouscher contributed to this report.
