Deputy injured chasing man who dropped off gunshot victim at Oakland hospital

OAKLAND — An Alameda County sheriff’s deputy was injured Monday afternoon chasing a man who had just dropped off a gunshot victim at Highland Hospital, authorities said.

The extent of the deputy’s injuries was not immediately available.

The 22-year-old man Berkeley man  he was chasing was caught several blocks from the hospital and arrested.

Authorities said the man had dropped off a 20-year-old Antioch man who had been shot, at the hospital, 1411 East 31st St., about 2:40 p.m.

The  gunshot victim, who had a leg wound, was in stable condition. Police later determined the shooting happened  in the area of 98th and Edes avenues.

When deputies tried to detain the man who had dropped off the gunshot victim, he reportedly shoved one of them and started running away with at least one deputy in foot pursuit.

During the chase, a deputy fell and injured himself and the pursuit was called off, authorities said.

Other deputies and Oakland police officers flooded the area and the suspect was detained about 2:54 p.m. in the 1300 block of East 28th Street, several blocks from the hospital by deputies.

Authorities said a preliminary search found drugs in the vehicle the wounded man had been driven to the hospital in.  Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting and no arrests have been made.
