OAKLAND — A woman killed when the car she was a passenger in collided with a semi-truck Monday night in East Oakland has been identified by the coroner’s office as 31-year-old Tahara Day of San Leandro.
Three other people injured in the collision, including the two drivers and a 14-year-old girl, are recovering from injuries.
The collision happened about 11:28 p.m. Monday at 68th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, not far from the Eastmont police substation.
Authorities said Day was a passenger in a Mercedes that was going westbound on Foothill when it collided with the truck which was going southbound on 68th Avenue. After the collision the truck continued going and crashed into a vacant building resulting in the truck and building catching fire.
Day was pronounced dead at the scene. The man driving the Mercedes, a 33-year-old Hayward resident and the 14-year-old girl who was passenger in the vehicle were both hospitalized. Police have not confirmed the relationship between the three occupants.
The driver of the truck, a 37-year-old man from Visalia, suffered burns and other injuries and was taken to a hospital where he was in stable condition. Authorities said he works at the Port of Oakland during the week.
The intersection where the collision happened has traffic signals and police said they are investigating if either of the vehicles failed to stop for a red light. Police have previously said alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the collision.
The collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information may call traffic investigators at 510-777-8540.
