OAKLAND — Police are searching for a driver who hit and killed a mother outside an East Oakland school Friday afternoon.
The victim was a 40-year-old Oakland resident, authorities said, but her name has not been released.
The woman was in a crosswalk and on her way to pick up her child from Elmhurst United Middle School on the 1800 block of 98th Avenue when she was struck about 3:20 p.m., authorities said.
Authorities said the Nissan had passed another vehicle that had stopped to let the woman cross the street.
Authorities pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
The suspect vehicle is described as a 2004 to 2006 white Nissan Maxima with damage to the front passenger side windshield. The car was last seen traveling southbound on 98th Avenue.

The hit-and-run happened as school was letting out for the day, said Oakland Unified School District spokesman John Sasaki, adding that a number of children witnessed the collision.
District and school employees will be standing by to support students when they return from the holiday weekend.
In the meantime, Sasaki urged drivers to slow down.
“98th Avenue is not a raceway,” Sasaki said. “They need to know lives are hanging in the balance.”
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the driver. Anyone with information can contact police at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
