OAKLAND — A structure at a homeless encampment near the Veterans’ Memorial Building in Oakland was engulfed by flames Friday morning.
The fire erupted just before 7 a.m. near 200 Grand Ave., near the intersection of Harrison Street and Grand Avenue and across the street from Lake Merritt.
People at the encampment said that the fire may have started from burning candles. No one appeared to be injured.
Once firefighters got on the scene, they were able to quickly extinguish the flames, which initially shot over 15 feet in the air vertically and also ignited nearby vegetation.
