Driver dies in fiery Oakland traffic crash

OAKLAND — A 46-year-old man died Thursday night after the SUV he was driving crashed in West Oakland and caught fire, authorities said Friday.

The man’s name was not released. Police said he did not live in Oakland.

The wreck happened at 7:39 p.m. Thursday in the 1800 block of Seventh Street. Police said the man was driving a Chevrolet Suburban at a high rate of speed when the vehicle made an unsafe change of course. The car then collided with a cement pillar in the median before catching fire.

Firefighters removed the driver from the SUV; the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said it is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

The death remains under investigation. Police ask anyone with information to call traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
