OAKLAND — An 18-month-old boy who suffered major injuries Friday when he fell from a fire escape at a downtown apartment building where his family lives has died, authorities said Monday.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office confirmed Monday that David Rivera-Vargas died Saturday afternoon at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland where he was taken after falling.

The boy fell from a second floor fire escape at his family home in the 1400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way shortly before 5 p.m. Friday.

The boy’s family lives on the third floor of the four-story building.  Authorities said he left their apartment and made it to the second floor fire escape that he climbed onto before falling to the sidewalk below.

Police are still investigating but at this point consider the boy’s death to be “an unfortunate, tragic accident,”  Officer Felicia Aisthorpe said.
