OAKLAND — A 29-year-old woman shot late Thursday night at an East Oakland gas station died early Friday, becoming the city’s third homicide of the year, authorities said.
The name of the woman, an Oakland resident, was not immediately released pending notification of her family.
The shooting happened about 11:56 p.m. Thursday at the Kwik Serv gas station in the 2200 block of East 12th Street.
Initial reports were that the woman was shot after getting into a dispute with another person. Police did not say what investigators believe the dispute was about.
The suspect fled before police got to the station.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she died several hours later, authorities said.
The killing is the third homicide of the year investigated by Oakland police and the seventh since Monday. Last year at this time police had investigated one homicide in the city. The final tally of homicides in Oakland last year was 86, down from 126 homicides in 2023.
Anyone with information about the woman’s killing may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950. Anyone with videos or photos related to the shootings can email them to cidvideo@oaklandca.gov.
The station has been the scene of several prior shootings in the past few years.
Among them were a 27-year-old Pinole woman fatally shot on March 23 of last year. In June 2023, a 6-year-old boy was wounded in the leg by a stray bullet during a shootout between other people. And while the station was owned by Valero, a man was fatally shot there in March of 2021.
