OAKLAND — One man died and 19 other residents were displaced after a fire Friday morning at a West Oakland duplex, officials said.

The name of the 39-year-old man who died was not released Friday pending notification of his next of kin.

The fire started about 3:15 a.m. Friday at a two-story Victorian house that had been converted into a duplex in the 1200 block of 12th Street, officials said.

The residents displaced — 12 juveniles and seven adults — were able to get out on their own, officials said. They were assisted by the Red Cross.

The man who died was found unconscious from smoke inhalation in an attic area and brought outside the residence by firefighters, said fire department spokesman Michael Hunt. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The fire was brought under control at 3:47 a.m. with 25 firefighters on scene, Hunt said. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was an electrical issue, Hunt said.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
