OAKLAND — A 43-year-old woman died Tuesday morning after authorities said her SUV collided with some other vehicles — one head-on — as she sped past traffic in the Sausal Creek area of East Oakland, authorities said.

Her name was not immediately released. Police said she was a San Leandro resident.

The collisions, which injured several other people, happened about 8:28 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of East 27th Street and Fruitvale Avenue.

Police said the woman was alone in a Mazda SUV driving southbound in the 2700 block of Fruitvale Avenue at a high rate of speed, straddling the double yellow lines and passing stopped traffic.

The SUV sideswiped a Dodge Journey that was stopped in the southbound lane. It then rear-ended a BMW X-1 that was stopped in front of the Dodge Journey, police said.

That collision pushed the BMW into an Audi A4 that was in front of it and caused the back end of the woman’s SUV to propel into the northbound lanes of Fruitvale Avenue, where it was broadsided by a Toyota Highlander SUV, police said.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where she died at 8:45 a.m., authorities said

Three occupants of the BMW — a 45-year-old woman and two juveniles, ages 12 and 15 — sustained minor injuries and self-transported to a hospital, police said.

The Audi was occupied by a 29-year-old man and a 4-year-old girl. The man sustained minor injuries, police said.

A 42-year-old woman driving the Toyota Highlander was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. A 48-year-old woman driving the Dodge Journey was not injured.

The intersection was closed for more than two hours while police investigated.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
