RICHMOND — A man died Friday morning after his pickup truck went down an embankment on Interstate 580 and crashed into a tree, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man’s name was not immediately released pending confirmation of his identity and notification of his next of kin.

The crash happened about 6:50 a.m. Friday on westbound I-580 east of the Harbour Way offramp.

The CHP said the man’s Toyota Tacoma hit a sign pole on the right shoulder before going down an embankment and crashing into a tree.

The man was trapped in the truck; paramedics gave him medical treatment while firefighters tried to free him from the wreckage.

He was finally removed from the vehicle about 7:26 a.m. but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities closed the two righthand westbound lanes about 7:54 a.m. while officers investigated and the truck was removed from the crash site. The closure was still in effect at 9:20 a.m.

The cause of the crash was under investigation. Anyone with information may call the Oakland CHP office at 510-457-2875.
