OAKLAND — A 62-year-old man who had just used an ATM at a downtown bank Tuesday night was beaten with a rifle, robbed and carjacked, authorities said.
Even though the man suffered lacerations to his head, he did not require hospitalization, authorities said.
The violent robbery and carjacking happened about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of 20th Street at Webster Street outside the Chase Bank branch, authorities said.
Initial reports were that the man had just gotten some cash from the ATM and was walking to his parked 2015 BMW 435 when a vehicle stopped and three males got out, at least one holding a rifle, police said.
They confronted the man, who was hit with the rifle, knocked to the pavement and robbed of his wallet and watch before the suspects fled in the man’s car, police said.
The vehicle the suspects were initially in, which contained a fourth man, also drove away.
Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not available. The BMW had not been recovered as of early Wednesday afternoon.
Robbery investigators were trying to determine if the suspects may have been involved in other cases.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrests of the suspects. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
There has been an uptick in such robberies in the city, including other incidents involving victims using ATMs or visiting banks in the area of Tuesday’s robbery.
One victim was a retired Alameda County judge who lost her phone, wallet and cash at gunpoint on June 28 in the 1900 block of Franklin Street after using an ATM. Another man was robbed the same day; he had just made a deposit at a bank in the 2000 block of Franklin Street and had his phone, wallet and personal items taken at gunpoint in the bank’s rear parking lot.
