OAKLAND — Two teenage boys were wounded in a shooting Thursday after the car they were driving in was struck by bullets in a West Oakland neighborhood, authorities said.
Officers responded to reports of ShotSpotter activity around 12:40 p.m. near 28th and Chestnut streets, not far from McClymonds High School’s athletic field.
When officers arrived at the intersection of 28th and Myrtle streets, they found 12-year-old and 14-year-old boys suffering from gunshot wounds to their legs.
Officers learned the two had been driving in the 3000 block of Chestnut Street when they heard bullets and realized they had been struck.
The two managed to make to the intersection of 28th and Chestnut streets before their car’s two bullet-riddled rear tires went flat, and got out from there and walked to Myrtle Street.
The pair were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, and listed in stable condition, police said.
At the scene Thursday afternoon, police worked to catalogue evidence of the shooting, recovering spent rounds from a blue Hyundai Elantra with a bullet hole in a rear window and more holes in its doors.
Investigators said they do not yet have any motives or suspects in custody, and did not share any associated suspect or vehicle descriptions.
For information leading to the arrest of a suspect, police are offering up to $10,000 in the shooting. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers of Oakland at 510-777-8572.
