OAKLAND — Two dogs were killed but no people injured in an East Oakland house fire Tuesday morning, officials said.
The fire started about 8:38 a.m. Tuesday in a two-story home in the 7600 block of Sunkist Drive.
No residents were at the home when the fire started, Battalion Fire Chief Demond Simmons said.
Seventeen firefighters had the fire under control at 9:35 a.m.
The dogs were found during a search of the home, Simmons said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials estimated damage to be in excess of $90,000.
Smoke from the fire could be seen for several miles.
A man who was seen inside the house a few hours after the fire was put out, presumably the resident, did not want to talk to a reporter.
