OAKLAND — A 31-year-old man died from injuries suffered Friday night when he was hit while crossing an East Oakland street by a vehicle that kept going, police said Wednesday.
The driver of the vehicle that hit the man was still being sought by police.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s coroner’s bureau identified the man Thursday as Demarco Vierra. Authorities said he lived in the area where the fatal collision happened.
Police said the collision happened about 8 p.m. Friday in the 6100 block of Bancroft Avenue.
Police said the victim was walking northbound on Bancroft and was in midblock outside a crosswalk when he was struck by a black, four-door hatchback vehicle that was going eastbound on Bancroft.
The man suffered grave injuries to his head and was taken to a hospital where he died early Monday morning, authorities said.
Police are trying to determine the exact make of the vehicle and get a description of the driver. The vehicle was last seen going northbound on 62nd Avenue.
Police said it is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in what happened.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the identity and arrest of the driver who fled the scene. Anyone with information may call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
