OAKLAND — A 15-year-old boy was arrested in the Thursday night fatal stabbing of his 51-year-old father in their East Oakland home, authorities said.

The dead man’s name was not immediately released. Authorities also did not identify the boy who was arrested.

The stabbing was reported about 9:28 p.m. Thursday at a house in the 11100 block of Golf Links Road, near the Oakland Zoo.

Authorities said the boy and his father had gotten into a verbal argument. When an older relative who also lives in the home tried to intervene, he and the father got into a physical dispute that resulted in the older relative being thrown to the floor.

At that point the teen got a knife from the kitchen and stabbed his father multiple times in an effort to defend the older relative, police said.

The older relative called police to report what had happened, authorities said. The father was pronounced dead at the scene.

The son was arrested at the home and was booked later at Alameda County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder.

The killing is the 130th death being investigated as a homicide by Oakland police this year, nearing the 131 homicides recorded in the city in 2012 — the highest number recorded since 2006. The California Highway Patrol is also investigating five fatal shootings on Oakland freeways this year. Last year Oakland police investigated 109 homicides in the city.
